The German movement is marked with the distinctive Becker circular trademarks, and is serial numbered 202778. This clocks trademarks list both the Freiburg and the Braunau Becker factory locations (FREIB. I. SCHL., BRAUNAU I. BOEHM). Interestingly, this trademark is not listed in the classic trademark reference book by Kochmann. None the less, the quality of the mechanism is quite nice, even though it has to be the least clean mechanism currently listed on this site. I would estimate the vintage of this piece at roughly 1880.
Because of the rather soiled condition of this mechanism it will be cleaned, polished, and fully serviced at no additional charge. Note too, the weights and bob will be fully polished and lacquered, making this piece ready to hang and enjoy when you receive it.
Striking on two long, straight gongs, this clock has a porcelain dial in perfect condition with no chips or hair-line cracks. The dial has grommets to the winding holes, a nice touch that helps eliminate chipping the dial while winding the clock, and the pendulum adjusting nut is made in two parts so you can lock the nut in place (ok - I’m not sure why the nut would move, but it is interesting to note that on some of the nicer clocks they use the two part nuts, almost like they think the nuts will unwind or something). The pulleys are embossed, the clock has its original porcelain beat scale (in perfect condition), original wall stabilizers, perfect pendulum bob with steel back, excellent condition weights (I really think they are the nicest on the site - quite a contrast with the cleanliness of the mechanism) with top plates that are knurled around the edges - a nice touch. I mentioned the straight gong - for some this is a very desirable feature in that the straight gongs have a deeper, more resonating tone than the more conventional coiled gongs.
The oak case is in very, very nice condition in its classical honey-oak color. I only hope you can tell from the photo’s how perfect this case really is. It is very clean, and in wonderful, original condition. And, all of the glass is old and wavy!
Note too the unusual, correct headpiece, and the lovely carving to the columns, and especially to the base. The carved base is especially nice, with its deeply-relieved carving and excellent condition. This clock has a number of lovely features that make the case stand-out!
Caveats: While the mechanism is rather filthy, it will be cleaned at no charge, the weights and pendulum bob polished, making this actually quite a nice piece - since you will have nothing that needs done before hanging and enjoying!
