While Haldek is not listed in the reference books, Temesvár (Timisoara) is a city in Western Romania, near the Timis river and the Yugoslav border. The town is first mentioned in 1246, was held by the Turks from 1552 to 1716 when it was captured by prince Eugene of Savoy.
I suspect the Turkish influence helps to explain the rather unusual headpiece on this lovely little clock. And what a case it is! While it needs a good cleaning and waxing, the original finish is in great condition (under all the dirt and grime - I sometimes think a little grime does a good job of preserving the underlying finish). Of course, there is wear on some of the edges, but not excessive, only adding to the rich, well loved overall patina.
With its deep maroon finish, exquisitely small proportions, 4.5 inch zinc-backed bob (in perfect condition), 5.5 inch dial with ornate spun-brass gold-gilt bezel, beautifully blued hands, old glass throughout, correct and small wall stabilizers, lovely and slightly unusual 5 spoke pulley, this clock is just too cute and too different. And it is only 33 inches long!
Caveats: The bottom finial is missing (I would ask $40 to provide an appropriate replacement).
