This clocks German movement is serial numbered 5384, is clearly an example of one of the better factory made mechanisms, and, it has been recently cleaned and runs well. As is typical for a clock of this vintage, the strike is on a coiled steel gong, providing a much more subtle strike than the later clocks that strike on a straight rod.
1.
When you look at this clock the first thing your eye focuses on is the very nicely done carving - the rather ornate column tops and bottoms (the hallmark of the Altdeutsche period), triangular base with its carved decoration, correct finials, and nicely-done headpiece. If you are a more discriminating viewer you might also note that this piece is not missing any case parts – and none of the pieces give any indication of being replacements – it really is nice to be able to buy clocks that are in good, original condition!
While this is an attractive clock when first viewed, a more detailed inspection reveals a delicate inlay in the pieces backboard. The complex and rather intricate banding around the contrasting central veneered section is quite unusual and attractive. And the clock is wonderfully correct, right down to its brass bob with zinc back, matching weights with knurled tops, original beat scale, engraved (not embossed) pulleys, old wall stabilizers... And the case has been cleaned and polished to perfection. The door glass is wavy, while the side glass is clear (and apparently new).
If you are looking for an Altdeutsche Vienna Regulator that stands out, both because of its excellent, original condition, and its style, this clock should be a perfect fit.
Caveats: Side glass is new, and there are a number of subtle hairlines to the dial center, none to the chapter ring.
