Year-running wall clocks will always be a
rarity, making this clock one of the more interesting pieces
offered on our site.
The large and imposing 79 inch oak case has aged to a beautiful
dark brown patina. The case is in excellent condition, having
benefited from a thorough cleaning and waxing. When we take the
time to clean a case it lets me get to know the clock quite well
– this is a very well made, and solid case.
As with many of the pieces in this auction, it is a pleasure to be
able to offer a clock like this that is complete and original,
right down to its finials and headpiece. The white enamel dial is
in perfect condition, accentuated by the hands that have been
blued to nearly black. The mechanism is
cleaned, has been running for several years, and keeps
time. When I cleaned this mechanism I took the opportunity to
polish the mechanism screws, and re-blue them. The mechanism is
truly stunning

While you would expect a clock this to beat a true second, this
one is surprising -- it beats 3400 times an hour, with a pendulum
that is longer than the typical seconds pendulum. In fact, this
pendulum measures roughly 43 inches to the bobs center of gravity!
The door glass and one of the side panes are old and wavy, the
other side panel is new enough to not be wavy. To my eye,
everything on the case is in very good, original condition. The
pendulum bob weighs 5 pounds, the weight 26 pounds. And the door
has a lock with an old key.
Caveats: The bottom finial was
once longer than it is now, with evidence that the end has broken
off.
